Pareidolia
Title Sequence Project | RIT Fall 2022 Semester
My class was assigned a simple task; imagine a TV series that does not yet exist and create for it a title sequence. The topic was entirely up to us, as was our medium of choice and final execution. Due to my refound enjoyment of digital painting from my previous project [link project], I decided to continue down that route, this time trying out a new program called Adobe Fresco.
Pitch
Inspired by my love for archaeology and science fiction, I imagined a live-action TV show about an archaeologist who goes back in time with the help of her magpie bird companion to solve ancient mysteries of the past (and prevent time anomalies along the way!). But there's a catch; the outside world can never know of her exploits, including the viewers, and by the end of each arc the viewer is left wondering if any of what occurred actually happened, or if it was all a daydream. However, I wanted my title sequence to err more on the symbolic side rather than showing scenes from the show, as is common for contemporary title sequences. I also wanted to incorporate one of my earlier ideas that had to do with daydreaming and clouds. From this the main idea of Pareidolia was created. A rather fitting name too, as Pareidolia is the phenomena where we see recognizable shapes or objects in ambiguous visual patterns, such as making shadow puppets or seeing shapes in the clouds.
As the project progressed I developed an overall theme of realistic and historic becoming pareidolic, as can be seen in the animatic above. Beginning with the magpie symbolism, the sequence transitions through several historic locations the character and her companion will travel to then morphing into clouds, which can be seen in nearly every scene.
